Preserve length / varispeed

Pitch-shifting a sample classically affects duration:

  • Varispeed (⇔) — like a tape machine. Pitching up makes the sample shorter; down makes it longer. Tight, transient-true; great for drums.
  • Preserve length (⏱) — routes through a granular AudioWorklet that decouples pitch from duration. Hann-windowed 40 ms grains at 75% overlap (4 grains active at any moment) with Catmull-Rom cubic interpolation, so high frequencies and transients survive ±2-octave shifts cleanly. Best for melodic loops where you want to play across the keyboard without speed changes.
NotePreserve length is bypassed automatically when the effective pitch shift is 0 — drum hits at unity stay bit-perfect even with Preserve on. Only when the pitch knob, fine tune, per-step note, or pitch drift adds up to a real shift does the granular path activate.
