Multi-sampler (16-pad bank)

A multi-sampler track is a single track row that holds 16 independent pads — drum-rack-style. Each pad has its own sample, AHDR envelope, pitch, filter, trim points, reverse, and preserve-length setting. Use it for full drum kits, slice banks, multi-articulation instruments, or anywhere you'd reach for a drum-rack on hardware (MPC, Maschine, Battery, Drum Rack in Live).

Loading samples into pads

  • Drag-drop any audio file straight onto a pad cell from disk (desktop). Auto-decoded into the sample library and assigned.
  • ⋮ menu on each padLoad sample… opens the picker (library, packs, disk browser, or your own recordings). Record into pad opens the mic recorder modal — arm-then-record with live waveform + level meter, then preview/retake/use before committing.
  • Slice long sample — pick a long recording from the library, we auto-detect transients and chop it into pads 1..N. Great for breakbeats and vocal phrases.

Programming pads in the step grid

Two views, your choice per track:

  • Compact (default). One row in the step grid. Tap toggles a step; vertical drag on a step picks which pad fires there. Good for sparse patterns where most steps target one pad and you want maximum vertical room.
  • Expanded (drum-rack). Click the ▸ ▾ chevron on the multi-sampler track header — the row expands to show one sub-row per populated pad, each with its own step lane. Tap a step on a pad-row to toggle that pad firing on that step. Multiple pads can fire on the same step (kick + hat together). Includes a "+ Pad" row at the bottom that opens an action sheet to load/record into a new pad.

Mobile

On phones the desktop expanded-rows view is replaced by a horizontal pad-chip strip above the 4×4 step grid. Each chip = one pad (number, name, mute, ⋮). Tap a chip to switch which pad's lane the grid below is editing. The "+ Pad" chip at the end adds a new pad. The chip's ⋮ menu includes Edit pad… which opens the bottom panel and scrolls directly to that pad's editor.

Pad editor (the waveform view)

Tap any pad in the bank (or use Edit pad… from the chip menu) and the editor appears below the bank with everything visible at once:

  • Waveform with draggable start/end handles at the left and right edges. Drag inward to chop — what's between the handles is what plays.
  • AHDR envelope curve drawn over the waveform in the track's accent color. Four breakpoint dots on the curve are draggable: end-of-attack, end-of-hold, end-of-decay, end-of-release. A live readout bubble shows the current value while dragging. Or use the attack/hold/decay/release sliders below — both update the same params and stay in sync.
  • Sliders for pitch, fine-tune, filter cutoff, resonance.
  • Toggles for reverse, preserve-length (granular pitch), and a choke group (see below).

How sample playback works (and choke)

Sonyk is polyphonic by default — firing pad B does NOT cut off pad A's tail. Each pad gets its own voice on the granular path, so a kick can decay while a hat fires on the next step.

  • Plain sampler voices (preserve-length OFF on a pad — varispeed playback) are fire-and-forget — every fire creates a fresh node graph that plays through its envelope and disposes itself. Voices overlap freely; nothing cuts off automatically.
  • Granular voices (preserve-length ON) hold one persistent AudioWorklet voice per (track, pad). Re-firing the same pad while it's still decaying restarts that pad's grains — the same-pad-retrigger behavior every drum machine has. Different pads do NOT choke each other; both ring out.

When you DO want explicit cutoff — open-hat / closed-hat being the canonical example — assign both pads to the same choke group via the dropdown in the pad editor. Options are none (default) and 1..8. Two pads with the same non-zero group will fast-fade each other on fire (~10ms ramp, no clicks). Set both hats to group 1, the closed-hat chops the open-hat tail every time it fires — and only those two pads, the rest of the kit plays freely.

NoteChoke groups currently only fast-fade granular (preserve-length) voices, since plain sampler voices don't expose a handle to fade them mid-flight. If you need choke on a varispeed pad, flip preserve-length on for that pad — at unity pitch the granular path is bypassed automatically (transient-true), so you keep the tight drum sound but gain choke support.
